The rapid rise of NFT art in 2021 brought with it a proliferation of platforms, marketplaces, and technical infrastructures. Many of these services have since disappeared, raising urgent questions about the future of artworks that depended on them.
How vulnerable are blockchain-based artworks when the platforms and services they rely on disappear? Are on-chain artworks better equipped to survive than works dependent on external storage and interfaces? What strategies are artists, curators, and conservators developing to ensure their long-term access, display, and preservation?
Join us for an online café bringing together Regina Harsanyi, Leander Herzog, Dominique Moulon, and Kelani Nichole to explore the challenges and opportunities of preserving digital artworks within an evolving and often fragile ecosystem.
Each speaker will give a 10-minute presentation introducing their practice and involvement with NFTs and blockchain-based art. The presentations will be followed by a discussion moderated by Philippe Bettinelli and Claudia Roeck, and a Q&A with the audience.
The online café is organised by Manon Abt, Philippe Bettinelli, Sabine Himmelsbach, and Claudia Roeck, as part of Working Group 2 of EMBARK (European Media and Born-digital Art Conservation and Knowledge Network).
