WG1 maps European networks of media art conservation to identify which infrastructures, knowledge and approaches are missing or insufficient for the responsible care and preservation of media art. This includes identifying the shared needs of collecting institutions, artists, conservation practitioners and researchers. By surveying existing infrastructure, competencies, processes and tools, we learn about conservation practices beyond the established canon — such as artistic approaches to preservation and grassroots, community-based initiatives — and explore what the canon can learn from these approaches, and vice versa. This allows us to identify both knowledge and structural gaps. The aim is to build a European repository of practices and expertise that improves the visibility of what is currently available, identifies strengths, and advances research-based solutions to close those gaps.
